Basurto – San Mamés

Garellano Urban Renovation Plan

The process for the integral improvement of the Basurto district has resulted in actions such as the underground routing of the Adif Ancho Métrico line, which has enabled the construction of a new boulevard, the demolition of the Sabino Arana viaduct, the new accesses to the A-8, the new underground Bilbao Intermodal bus station, the new San Mamés stadium or the urban renovation of the Garellano area.

In the case of Garellano, a process promoted by Bilbao City Council and BILBAO Ría 2000, the action involved the transfer to Miribilla of the municipal Civil Protection and Citizen Security services, the construction of a new Civic Centre on Calle Zankoeta Street and the creation of a new residential neighbourhood in which green areas, housing and other facilities coexist.

As a result of a Competition for Ideas, the architectural firm “Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners”, led by Richard Rogers, designed the Garellano Master Plan, a document setting out the general lines of development in this area, which was validated by Bilbao City Council. Subsequently, it also drew up a Special Urban Renewal Plan, which was also processed and approved by the municipal planning authority.
